The clocks are changing. The mornings are darker. The temperature is dropping.
And somewhere in the UK, someone is already saying:“It’s only a bit of rain…”
But working outside through a British winter is no joke. Cold hands. Wet boots. Frozen ground. Driving rain. Mud everywhere. Shorter daylight hours. And that special kind of wind that somehow finds the one gap between your jacket and your hi-vis.
For the people actually out there building our projects, winter changes everything and it’s not just about putting another coat on.
Mindset matters.
When you’re cold, wet and tired, concentration can drop and simple jobs can become harder.
Planning matters.
Weather forecasts, lighting, access, ground conditions, drying times and sequencing suddenly become a much bigger part of the programme.
The little things matter.
Somewhere warm and dry to take a break. Hot drinks. Dry PPE. Decent gloves. And recognising when conditions have simply become unsuitable to carry on safely.
At Explore Modular, we can plan programmes, manufacture off-site and reduce time spent working in the elements — but construction will always rely on people getting out there and making it happen.
So, as we head towards winter, a question for both the people on the tools and the people running the jobs:
What’s the ONE thing that makes the biggest difference when working on site through winter?
Oportwest PPE?
More realistic programmes?
Hot food and drinks?
Better welfare?
Starting later?
Or just a good attitude and plenty of tea?
Interested to hear this one from both sides of the site fence.
