And judging by my face on The Gruffalo River Ride at Chessington, apparently so can a family day out…
When you run a business, properly switching off isn't always easy.
There’s always another email to answer.
Another tender to review.
Another problem that needs solving.
Another opportunity you don't want to miss.
And when you've spent years building something, taking your foot off the pedal, even for a day can sometimes feel uncomfortable.
But this photo reminded me of something important.
This is the reason I work so hard in the first place.
The early mornings, late nights, travelling around the country, pressure, stress and sacrifices aren't just about growing a business or hitting another turnover target.
They're about creating a life for the people I love.
And there's not much point working relentlessly to provide for your family if you're never actually present to enjoy the life you're building with them.
So yesterday was about putting the phone away a little more, forgetting about modular buildings for a few hours and making memories with the family.
And do you know what?
Explore Modular survived without me.
In fact, sometimes stepping away is exactly what you need. You come back clearer, more energised and with a bit more perspective about why you're doing it all.
Building a successful business matters enormously to me.
But being a successful dad and husband matters more.
Although judging by this picture, I might need to work on looking slightly braver in front of the kids…
Anyone else find actually switching off from their business harder than it should be?
