The latest developments across the NHS England Community Diagnostic Centre programme show just how far modular healthcare has moved.
At Walton Hospital, a £7.5m expansion has added permanent MRI and CT facilities alongside DEXA scanning and children's audiology.
Five modular units were manufactured offsite and installed while the hospital remained operational. And this isn't an isolated example. A £12.5m two-storey modular Community Diagnostic Centre has opened in Scarborough, while in Essex, 159 offsite-manufactured modules are being used in the delivery of the new £54m Pitsea CDC.
For us at Explore Modular, the interesting part isn't simply that these buildings are modular. It's what modular construction is now being trusted to deliver.
MRI. CT. X-ray. Endoscopy. Consultation and treatment spaces. Women's health. Specialist clinical environments.
Modular healthcare is moving well beyond the traditional perception of temporary wards and additional office space. But increasing complexity also makes early engagement and pre-construction more important than ever.
Building on a live healthcare estate means understanding utilities, logistics, fire strategy, MEP requirements, clinical adjacencies, access and enabling works long before the modules arrive on site.
The factory is only one part of successful modular delivery. Get the pre-construction strategy right, and offsite manufacture provides a real opportunity to increase NHS capacity while reducing disruption to existing services.
It's an exciting direction for UK healthcare construction and one we're watching closely at Explore Modular
