Explore Modular was appointed to deliver a 2-bay modular building for Lavington School to provide additional space for creative arts and media activities. The building was designed to include an open-plan art room, dedicated storage, and a media room equipped for projection and screen-based teaching. The project was carried out in a live school environment and delivered in time for the new academic year.
Constraints – Restricted Access & Operational Site
The site presented a number of operational challenges:
Works were carried out during term time, requiring strict coordination with school operations.
Access to the proposed site was via a shared car park and narrow internal roads, necessitating delivery timing to avoid peak hours.
Explore Modular produced a detailed Installation & Logistics Plan, which included:
Designated exclusion zones for pupil safety.
Trackway protection for surrounding surfaces.
Coordinated crane lifts and module delivery during off-peak hours.
Stakeholder engagement with the Estates Manager and Headteacher.
Challenges, Successes, and Risk Mitigation
Challenges:
Integrating bespoke art facilities in a compact 2-bay footprint.
Delivering the scheme without impacting summer activities or exam preparations.
Maintaining programme certainty despite constrained access.
Mitigation Measures:
Explored pre-installation layouts with the client to ensure the modular format maximised usable space.
Held weekly coordination meetings to keep key stakeholders aligned and informed.
Pre-fabricated the units off-site, reducing time and disruption on site.
Successes:
Delivered a fully functional, modern art and media facility on time and on budget.
Achieved high satisfaction from school leadership and teaching staff.
Demonstrated flexibility by adapting the standard module format to meet specialist education needs.
